Minuscule Window Spots
Giovanni Maria Tommaso 1950 (Rome)
those minuscule spots of red & brown
have been on the window glass
above the sink for several years
they never really showed up until now
as I bend with my glasses frame in hand
& make an effort to strain to see them
with the end of my plastic spoon I scrape
somehow miraculously remembering when
my dear Aunt Vivian my mom Louise & I
watched as she made sauce "succo" to her
precise in-head receipt for she loved to cook
entertain laugh, smile & to make conversation
my Aunt V was a charmer a doll a pristine doer
what she decided to do had to be thought-out
& when she took it on she mastered it fully her
breads & fruitcakes were to die for & expensive
though she never charged nor made a profit but
as gifts or for the St. Joseph's table Aunt V went
all out never tiring never complaining everything
she did she did for Him to the best of her ability
we learn by example for when we see someone
in motion doing a good & virtuous act we seek
we ask & we find it within ourselves to imitate
the highest form of flattery to them to us & to God
About this poem
learning by example When we meet someone we admire, we study them and learn by their example, what gifts of personality & character they have to teach and impart. What a blessing to have such a person in one's family.
