THE DESTROYER
Derrick E Carey 1981 (Sarasota)
It was a warm
Summers eve
When the destroyer
Docked off shore
Of what is known
As Puerto Rico
The sky was
Darkening in the distance
A storm was brewing
And on the move fast
You could see all
Of the men
Fighting the high sails
As they were catching
The gust of wind from
The storm
You can hear
The first mate
Lighting the fire
Underneath the sailors
Pushing them to get
Control over the
Situation
So they could set ashore
Before the storm landed
Onto of them
The show caught
The attention of the people
Of the island
They began leaving
Out of the taverns
With their brews
In hand just to watch to
The sailors fighting the
Wailing winds
From the storm
And to make the situation
Even worse
The waves began to pick up
The men had finally got
The sails masked and rolled tight
To the sterns
As the first mate called out
And all the anchors dropped
From the ship until they
Hit bottom
The crowd on the beach
Cheered as the massive
Ship held position amongst
The waves
It’s a beautiful site
To watch such massive
Ship
Ride the waves as they come
Only a true captain cold have
Pulled off such a feit.
The men dropped the
Scurry boats into the water
And then they existed the
Massive ship
And moved to shore
As the men made their way
To shore the crowd of people
Met them with cheers and treated
Them like champions
The islanders enjoyed the
Show.
