Inside and Out
Oh Change, why is it that you paint
with such a violent brush,
crush the good
from things once understood,
and reduce those previously great
to nothing more than dirt and rags?
Empowered through the master of creation
and endowed with God’s gifts,
you sinfully sift through fragile lives
and, though Love carefully revives,
you have taken that hope away
and locked her within your own falsehoods.
Pity we who ignore your coming,
have mercy on our choice
to refuse to rejoice in consequence.
We neglect to change since
you came in the beauty of our light
to spread the Devil’s idea of night.
Change, you expect coddling and care,
for kind words to calm you
but are due much less
for the horrible, festering mess
you have, over centuries, created
to dissolve our true bonds of faith.
To refuse you is to damn ourselves,
as your careful love becomes forced
until you divorce from reason
and commit the ultimate act of treason
within the womb of our breakable hearts
which now give birth to a father’s likeness.
To save ourselves from cold abandonment,
you ask us to embrace the fury of your violence
and face the intensity of the flames.
Please take comfort in our false claims
and leave us to peacefully accept
the devastation you would have us nurture.
