True Fasting
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
Why have we fasted and see not,
Why have we humbled not knowing;
Taking no knowledge that we sought,
The day of your fast not showing.
On the day of your fast, you seek,
Oppressing workers for pleasure;
You only fast to fight the meek,
While lusting for more treasure.
Fasting like yours upon this day,
Will never let your voice be heard;
Since you do not trust and obey,
Obedient unto His Word.
Is there such a fast that I choose,
A day for one to be humble;
Bowing down to face the issues,
While praying not to stumble.
Is it acceptable to God,
A day for afflicting the soul;
Confessing whence you have been flawed,
Allowing the Lord to control.
Loosen the bonds of wickedness,
Undo the burden of your yoke;
The feeling of His blessedness,
Freeing yourself of any woke.
It is better to share your bread,
With the homeless who are starving;
Nourishment that they are fed,
Comforting them in their grieving.
Then your light shall break like the dawn,
Your healing springs up speedily;
Animosity will be gone.
Avoiding feeling greedily.
Then when you call, God will answer,
And you hear Him say “Here am I.”
Like a deer, you are a prancer,
And shouting out a joyful cry.
