The Fight

A secret mental struggle,
Against anxiety and despair.
An internal war raging out of control,
Those around us unaware.

We hug a friend in need,
When it is us, that is craving an embrace.
We tell those around us everything is okay,
While feeling tears, streaming down our face.

We want to rise above,
That which is holding us down.
We search for shreds of strength,
When there are none to be found.

Faint echos of inspiration,
In the vacuum of the quiet.
Distant and shimmering possibilities,
In the pitch black of the night.

Small pieces with little value,
Gathered in mass become a thing.
They create a flicker of hope,
Reigniting the ability to dream.

Slowly reaching out,
To each dark corner inside.
The light is becoming brighter,
Giving darkness nowhere else to hide.

It is a fight against hopelessness,
Darkness and depression cannot rule our lives.
Arm yourselves with hope, prayer, and love,
And be ready to fight when the enemy arrives.

Raised on a small farm outside of a small town in Texas, I was no stranger to work. It is this work ethic that has propelled my professional success but there is this other side of me. The side that deeply thinks about things. The side with an imagination and a desire to use my hands for more than just brute physical labor. more…
